Mercer Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Mocs

Bears avoid series sweep with win in game three
MACON, Ga. – Mercer split a Southern Conference softball doubleheader with Chattanooga on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-2 in the front leg before earning a 2-1 win in the finale. The Bears ended the weekend at 20-23 overall and 6-3 in conference play.

Game 1: Chattanooga 4, Mercer 2
The Bears took a one-run lead in the bottom of the first inning when Danielle Castleberry grounded out to the pitcher, allowing Micayla Rood to score from third base. Rood had led off the inning with an infield single and advanced into scoring position on a double by Allie Jones.

Stella Preston tossed four scoreless innings to open the contest, but got into trouble in the fifth when the Mocs plated four runs on four hits, including two home runs. The outburst put Mercer behind, 4-1. Despite another RBI for Castleberry on a single that scored Briana Rodriguez in the home half of the fifth that cut the Mocs' lead to two runs, Mercer was unable to complete the rally.

Game 2: Mercer 2, Chattanooga 1
Freshman Bailey Pattison continued her recent stretch of quality work in the circle, tossing seven innings while limiting the Mocs to one run on three hits. Pattison moved to 10-8 with the win and threw her second straight complete game.

For the third time in the series, Mercer opened the game with a lead as Tori Ash singled home Rodriguez in the bottom of the second inning. The Mocs knotted the series finale with an RBI groundout in the fourth, but Mercer bounced back on a sacrifice fly by Megan Lane in the bottom of the sixth. Kenlie Harvey – who led off the sixth with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a passed ball – scored on Lane's sacrifice fly.
