Bears to Face Mocs in SoCon Quarterfinals Thursday

Sixth-seeded Mercer opens the SoCon Championship on Thursday afternoon
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's tennis team will open the 2019 Southern Conference Championship on Thursday by facing No. 3-seeded Chattanooga at 3 p.m. at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center.

The Bears (10-14, 3-4 SoCon) enter the tournament as the No. 6 seed but earned a 4-3 win over Chattanooga during the regular season. In addition to being the tournament host, Mercer is led by SoCon Player of the Year Olivier Stuart and fellow All-SoCon Singles and Doubles First Team selection, Nicolas Guillon.

Stuart is the No. 107-ranked player nationally by the ITA after an undefeated SoCon season; the junior went 17-5 overall and 7-0 against conference competition at flight one. He and Guillon own a 13-7 regular-season record in doubles action as well.

Mercer plays host to the SoCon Women's and Men's Championship this week. All matches will be played at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center, starting with the quarterfinal round on Thursday. The semifinal round will be played Friday, followed by a pair of championship title matches on Saturday.

The Mocs head into Thursday's match with a 14-10 overall record and earned the No. 3 seed with a 4-3 SoCon mark. They own a three-match win streak over Samford, Covenant College and UNCG. Niklas Gerdes, who owns a 16-7 overall record, lead Chattanooga's singles play. Simon Bustamante and Kerim Hyatt lead the Moc's doubles play with a 14-6 record, dropping only one conference match this season.

Mercer is 6-3 all-time against the Mocs, having won six straight matches against them, including a 4-3 road victory in Chattanooga, Tenn. on March 24 this season. The Bears have won six straight matches in the head-to-head series.
