Three-run fourth propels Bears to midweek win
MACON, Ga. – Mercer softball rolled off three runs on four consecutive singles in the fourth inning to take the lead and then held on for the 3-2 non-conference win over Alabama State at Sikes Field Wednesday.
Â
The Bears (22-24) trailed by two coming into the frame before Micayla Rood, Allie Jones, Danielle Castleberry and Abby Walsh all singled in succession to plate three runs and take the lead for good. Castleberry led all players with a 3-for-4 day at the plate that included an RBI.
Â
Junior Lauren O'Dell (1-1) made her first appearance in the circle since an injury on February 16 and made the most of it. She earned the win after striking out three and giving up just two runs – one earned – in four innings of work. Lynn Gardner (4) took over from there and didn't allow a baserunner in the final three innings of the game to pick up the save.
Â
Alabama State got on the board first with an unearned run in the third, then added another run in the top of the fourth to take a two-run advantage. Vanessa Bradford (7-8) wore the loss for the Hornets, giving up three runs on seven hits and five walks through five innings of work.
Â
