UNCG swept doubleheader at Sikes Field
MACON, Ga. – UNCG used late pushes to sweep a doubleheader, 7-1 and 7-4, over Mercer Saturday at Sikes Field to take the Southern Conference series.
The Bears (22-26, 7-6 SoCon) and Spartans (27-19, 9-4) were locked in scoreless affairs through the first three innings of both games, but UNCG pulled away in both to earn the series victory.
Game One: UNCG 7, Mercer 1
The Spartans and Bears were locked in a scoreless tie until the fourth inning, when UNCG opened things up with two-run homers in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away with a 7-1 victory.
Gabi Howard started things with her first of two hits, a no-doubt two-run homer in the fourth. The Spartans put three on the board in the fifth after solo and two-run homers in the frame. Stephanie Bryden (19-10) held the Bears bats in check most of the game, allowing just three hits and striking out seven without a walk in a complete game effort.
Two of Mercer's three hits came from Micayla Rood, who finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored in the contest. The other hit was an RBI double from SoCon batting leader Danielle Castleberry in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Game Two: UNCG 7, Mercer 4
Mercer took a two-run lead with three consecutive doubles from Danielle Castleberry, Megan Lane and Kenlie Harvey in the fourth, but UNCG scored seven unanswered in the sixth and seventh innings to take the second leg.
The Spartans pulled ahead with a three-run sixth, then added four runs of insurance in the top of the last frame courtesy of four hits – including a solo homer from Kamryn Graves.
However, Mercer wasn't done yet as it was able to get the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh after Micayla Rood drove in two with a clutch, one-out double. Danielle Castleberry was hit by a pitch to put two on with two outs but Kylie Bouplon (7-7) closed it out to pick up the win for the Spartans.
