Lynn Gardner, Stella Preston shine in the circle
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Lynn Gardner and Stella Preston tossed a pair of complete games and Mercer relied on the long ball to sweep a Southern Conference doubleheader against ETSU at Betty Basler Field on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Mercer rallied from behind in both contests, defeating the Bucs, 5-4 and 3-1, to improve to 4-1 in league play. The Bears (18-21) will look to earn a series sweep in Sunday's finale at 1 p.m.
Â
Game 1: Mercer 5, ETSU 4
Shaila Warren blasted a go-ahead, three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to propel the Bears past ETSU in the series opener on Saturday. Mercer overcame a three-run deficit after ETSU took the lead on a home run by Nikki Grupp in the first inning.
Â
The long ball would prove to be the only hit Mercer freshman left-hander Lynn Gardner would surrender over the first six frames. Gardner (8-7) earned the win with a complete game effort, tossing seven innings while striking out six batters.
Â
Mercer's first run came on a RBI single by Tori Ash in the second inning. After Abby Walsh reached on a walk and later scored on a throwing error by the Bucs to make it a 3-2 deficit, Warren put Mercer ahead for good with her three-run home run.
Â
ETSU threatened in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run and put the tying run on second base, but Gardner struck out the final batter to end the contest.
Â
Pitchers of Record
» Win: Lynn Gardner (8-7)
» Loss: Kelly Schmidt (7-7)
Â
Game 2:
Stella Preston tossed a complete game while earned late-inning run support in the form of two home runs by Kenlie Harvey and Megan Lane as Mercer bested ETSU, 3-1. Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the sixth, Mercer tied the game on a solo home run by Harvey and later took the lead with a two-run shot by Lane.
Â
Preston, who allowed one unearned run in the second inning due to a throwing error, limited the Bucs to just five hits and struck out one batter. She forced 13 fly outs in the contest.
Â
The second game of the day did not end without suspense either, as ETSU put the tying run on second base before Preston slammed the door and stranded a pair in scoring position.
