Mercer softball brings home final weekly honors of the season
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The sweep theme continues for Mercer softball, as senior Megan Lane and freshman Lynn Gardner were respectively named the Southern Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week for April 29-May 5, the league office announced Monday.
Â
Lane, a senior from Brooksville, Fla., closed out her final regular season series in a big way – racking up seven hits in the three-game sweep at Furman over the weekend. She doubled, drove in three runs and scored twice in a 3-for-4 effort in Sunday's finale.
Â
A Mobile, Ala., native, Gardner picked up three saves in three appearances on the weekend after entering the series with just four saves all year. The freshman struck out 10 and allowed just three hits and a run through 7.1 innings in the circle.
Â
The honor is the second for Megan Lane this season and third over the course of her career; while it is the first for Lynn Gardner of her young career. Mercer has now taken home five weekly awards in the last five weeks.
Â
Lane, Gardner and the rest of the Bears will charge into the SoCon Tournament Wednesday as the fourth seed and meet the fifth-seeded ETSU Bucs at 10 that morning. All tournament games will be broadcast live on the SoCon Digital Network – ESPN+ will carry Saturday's championship game.
