Mercer Geared for SoCon Tournament

The Bears open Wednesday morning against No. 5 ETSU
MACON, Ga. – Fourth-seeded Mercer softball will begin its journey in the 2019 Southern Conference Tournament Wednesday at 10 a.m. against ETSU at Jim Frost Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The Bears (25-27) enter the week after a three-game sweep at Furman over the weekend and are set open the tournament against the Bucs (20-25-2). The two teams met earlier this season in Johnson City and Mercer came out on top in all three contests.

» Mercer had two players on the All-SoCon First Team, two on the Second Team and two on the All-Freshman team.
» Danielle Castleberry and Shaila Warren were the two Bears represented on the first team. Castleberry was tabbed the top second baseman in the league, while Warren earned one of the three outfield spots on the team.
» On the second team, Micayla Rood and Bailey Pattison earned honors - Rood in the outfield and Pattison in the circle.
» Bailey Pattison doubled up on awards, also being selected on the All-Freshman Team and was joined there by catcher Tori Ash.
» Mercer student-athletes earned five conference weekly honors in the last five weeks of the season - Megan Lane (April 8), Bailey Pattison (April 15), Kenlie Harvey (April 22), Megan Lane (May 6) and Lynn Gardner (May 6).
» Redshirt sophomore Danielle Castleberry leads the SoCon with a .373 batting average, 59 hits and 15 hit-by-pitches in 2019 -- she is second with a .473 on base percentage.
» Gardner ended the season with seven saves under her belt, good enough for tops in the league and ranking fourth nationally in the category.
» Abby Walsh leads the conference and ranks 36th nationally in sacrifice flies this season.

Mercer holds a 24-13 advantage over ETSU all-time – the Bears have won six straight over the Bucs since losing to them in nine innings in the 2017 SoCon Tournament in Chattanooga.

SCOUTING THE BUCS
Nikki Grupp batted at a .326 clip with 46 base hits, 21 of which were extra-base knocks, to lead ETSU at the plate. Kelly Schmidt leads the Bucs in both wins (8) and ERA (4.14), while Taylor Boling is second on the team with seven wins and a 4.45 ERA.
