Curry was the 2016 SoCon Player of the Year at rival Samford
MACON, Ga. – Mercer head softball coach Stephanie DeFeo announced Tuesday the hiring of former Samford star player and assistant coach Megan Curry as an assistant coach for the Bears.
Â
Curry has been a private hitting instructor in the Birmingham area for the past year after working two seasons on staff at her alma mater. Formerly Megan Dowdy, the Fairhope, Ala., native lettered four years and helped lead the Bulldogs to the 2016 SoCon Championship.
Â
"We are excited to have Megan join our program," DeFeo said. "She is an outstanding coach with incredible passion and knowledge for the game, plus has experience coaching in the Southern Conference. I believe she will raise the level of our program and I think she is a coach that the players will find it easy to relate to."
Â
A former teammate of current Mercer assistant Mollie Hanson, the two combined to sweep the SoCon Player and Pitcher of the Year awards in 2016. Curry was a three-time All-SoCon First Team performer and broke the school's single season stolen bases, hits, at-bats and doubles records – she left the school with the career hits, at-bats and triples records, as well.
Â
"I am very excited about this opportunity to be at Mercer and want to thank Coach DeFeo for bringing me on staff," Curry said. "I am also looking forward to being on the field with Coach Mollie Hanson again while getting to compete for a Southern Conference championship. Coach DeFeo has created a winning environment and I have seen Mercer compete at a high level of softball over the years. I am blessed to be a part of this program and look forward to becoming part of the Mercer family."
