Men’s soccer holds-off late rally to improve to 2-0
MACON, Ga. – Mercer took advantage of two mid-game goals from Trevor Martineau and Dawson Gideon to hold on to a 2-1 win over Presbyterian at Betts Stadium Monday night.
Â
MAN OF THE MATCH
Michael Ille entered off the bench and provided 46 valuable minutes for the Bears – taking four shots and putting three on goal in the match. His most valuable contribution, however, was a perfect cross into the box that Martineau finished with a flashy header to put Mercer up right before the half.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both defenses stood strong for most of the first half, as it wasn't until the 40th minute that Martineau found the back of the net to open the scoring. The entire match was played physical by the two teams – Presbyterian recorded 13 fouls and three yellow cards, while Mercer tallied nine with a yellow of its own.
Â
Coming out of the break, Dawson Gideon took a pass from Jason Nduese-udom and put the Bears up two scores. Overall, the Bears were very accurate on their shot-taking – tallying eight shots on goal with 12 shots altogether.
Â
The Blue Hose only scored once, coming on a somewhat controversial free kick in the 78th minute – JR DeRose and the defense did not seem to be set up for the play when Luca Ziegler punched it in without any resistance. Presbyterian took 12 shots on the night, but only three were on goal.
Â
NOTABLES
The Bears hit the road once again, this time to Birmingham, Ala., where they will face UAB and Memphis on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
