Bears open their weekend with a thrilling victory

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mercer men's soccer kept up its strong start to the 2019 season Friday night at BBVA Field, beating UAB, 3-2, in thrilling fashion as a part of the Soccer for a Cure Classic.

Mercer (3-0-0) was able to shake off a late equalizer from the Blazers (0-3-0) thanks to a quick response from senior Roberto Arteaga. Right after UAB's Blake White scored his second goal of the night to even things up in the 79^th minute, Roberto Arteaga found the perfect opportunity to score his first goal of his senior campaign – knocking in the game-winner with his left foot in the 80^th minute.

Man of the Match
Reigning Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week Trevor Martineau continued his impressive play with two goals against the Blazers. The first being an equalizer in the 18^th minute of the match and the latter coming on an assist from Dawson Gideon right after halftime.

Notable

The multi-goal game from Trevor Martineau marked the sophomore's second of the likes in his career – he tallied two goals against UNCG in 2018.
Senior Roberto Arteaga scored his ninth career goal Friday night and the second game-winner of his career.
With the road win, Mercer improved its road winning streak to 11 straight matches – dating back to the 2017 season.
The Bears have now started the season 3-0 each of the last two years. Last year, they rode their hot start all the way to a SoCon regular season title.
