Ille lifts the Bears to the victory with a goal in the 108th minute

MACON, Ga. – For the third straight contest, Mercer men's soccer played an overtime match. On Tuesday night, Trevor Martineau scored the tying goal in the 85^th minute to force overtime before Michael Ille scored the game-winning goal lifting Mercer past USC Upstate, 3-2.

The Bears had goals scored by three different players in the match, Jason Nduese-udom, Martineau and Ille. The goal for Ille was his first goal of the season. Mercer outshot USC Upstate, 25-20 in the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Bears controlled play early in the first half, it was USC Upstate to score first. In the 19^th minute of the contest, Mario Arrocha found Nico Tallarico for a goal putting the Spartans ahead 1-0. Neither team scored again in the first half and the Spartans led 1-0 going to halftime.

Coming out of halftime, the Bears scored in the 51^st minute tying the game at 1-1. Jason Nduese-udom scored the goal that was assisted by Martineau and Leonel Toledo Jr tying the game. The tie game did not last long as in the 67^th minute Tallarico scored his second goal of the game putting the Spartans ahead, 2-1.

Battling against time, the Spartans got called for a handball in the box, which resulted in a Bears penalty kick. Martineau stepped up and took the kick and scored tying the game at 2-2 in the 85^th minute. Following the goal, both teams had opportunities to score but neither team took advantage until the 108^th minute when Michael Ille scored the game-winning goal giving the Bears a 3-2 double-overtime victory.

NOTABLES

For the third straight contest, the Bears went to overtime. Mercer won this contest in the 108 minute.
Trevor Martineau picked up four points (1 goal, 2 assists) in the contest as he assisted on the first goal, scored the second and assisted on the game-winning goal.
The Bears attempted 25 shots in the contest, the most in any game this season.
This was the first overtime victory of the season for the Bears

UP NEXT
The Bears return to action on Friday, Sept. 27 when they travel to Statesboro, Ga. to face Georgia Southern. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Eagle Field.
