"We're excited to have the opportunity to show off Hawkins Arena and showcase our talents in front of a national audience," said head coach Greg Gary. "Southern Conference basketball is some of the best in the country, and our team is happy for the chance to play a good Wofford team on national television."
Mercer will play all but one of its games on the ESPN family of networks this season the lone exception being its 83-73 win over Georgia Tech. That contest aired on Fox Sports South.
"When we first began discussing the opportunity to play on national TV, we knew it was something we wanted to make happen," Director of Athletics Jim Cole stated. "The beauty of Macon, Mercer University and Hawkins Arena will now be showcased to a national audience. We're certainly appreciative of the folks at ESPN who have helped make this possible."
Mercer and Wofford have battled 53 times with the Bears earning 25 wins, including a sweep of the Terriers last season – 70-68 on the road and 59-47 on senior day to close out the 2019-20 regular season.
Mercer is currently 6-0 for its best start since the 1966-67 campaign. The Bears' most recent win came at Georgia Southern in thrilling fashion. Down 16 in the second half, the Bears battled back, taking the lead late. The game looked to be headed to overtime, but Neftali Alvarez had other ideas. With 0.6 seconds remaining, Jeff Gary found Alvarez under the basket, and Alvarez's layup as time expired allowed the Black & Orange to leave Georgia Southern's Hanner Fieldhouse with a victory.
Prior to opening Southern Conference play, Mercer will travel to Georgia State (Dec. 16) and Kennesaw State (Dec. 22) while hosting Georgia Southwestern State (Dec. 19). Each of those contests can be seen live on ESPN+. Rick Cameron will have the call on the Mercer Sports Network (100.9 The Creek, Sports Mic) for the each of the three contests.
