Bears Close Out Road Trip with Win at Florida A&M

Kylie Helm recorded her third extra-base hit of the season as a pinch hitter
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Mercer softball team closed out its seven-game road trip on a high note with an explosive 10-4 victory over Florida A&M on Wednesday evening.

Tori Ash, Danielle Castleberry and Allie Jones led the Bears' offense by recording two hits each in the game. Ash provided one of two doubles on the evening for Mercer, along with pinch hitter Kylie Helm. Helm added two RBI in the game, while Abby Walsh drew a season-high three walks.

In the circle, Bailey Pattison moved to 4-1 with her fourth complete game of the year. The right-hander from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., scattered four runs (earned) on five hits and four walks. She struck out four Rattlers en route to her 15th career victory.
How It Happened
Mercer opened the scoring in the second inning that started with back-to-back walks by Walsh and Sarah Taylor. After Walsh advanced to third on a fielder's choice, she scurried home on a squeeze by Rachel Baker. Florida A&M responded in the home half of the inning to take the lead on a three-run home run by Alexis Blasingane.

Micayla Rood led off the top of the third with a walk as the Bears worked toward tying the game. Jones stepped to the plate with runners on second and third with just one out before she stung a single up the middle to cut the deficit to one, 3-2. Her and Castleberry executed a double steal that plated the game-tying run.

The back-and-forth affair continued in the bottom of the inning as FAMU regained the lead at 4-3. Mercer punched back in the top of the fourth with Ash kick-starting the rally with a double. A one-out single by Kenlie Harvey moved her to third before Ash scored on a Rood hit. The Bears' leadoff hitter stole second to put runners on second and third for Elisa Rosado who gave Mercer the lead once more. The rookie left fielder reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Harvey to score the go-ahead run. Walsh padded the lead with a bases loaded walk; one of her three free passes on the day.

Pattison held the Rattlers in check throughout the rest of the game, allowing no more than one base runner in each of the final four innings.

The Bears added some insurance runs in the final inning of the game as Ash came through with her second hit of the game to plate Walsh from second with the help of an errant throw by the FAMU left fielder. Helm stepped into the box as a pinch hitter and, as is becoming routine for the freshman from Anderson, Mo., smoked a two-run double to break the game wide open. After Harvey was hit by a pitch, Helm scored from second on another FAMU error to cap the scoring at 10-4.
