Bears Fall to Stetson, 5-2, on Saturday

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's tennis team was unable to extend its winning streak to two matches as they suffered a 5-2 setback at Stetson on Saturday afternoon.

Mercer (3-6) won at No. 1 doubles when Olivier Stuart and Hugo Lobo defeated the Hatters' Antoine Sanchez and Linus Bergevi, 6-4, but the Hatters ultimately won the doubles point.

Victories in the No. 2 and 3 doubles flights forced Mercer to play from a 1-0 deficit when singles action began. Stathis Tsiranidis and David Georgadze (No. 2) lost 6-3, while Carver Arant and Lucas Wayenburg suffered a 7-5 defeat.

In singles action, Stuart, the 46th ranked player in the ITA singles poll picked up his team-best sixth victory on the year with a 7-5, 6-2 defeat of Sanchez.

In the No. 2 position, Lobo started out strong with a 6-4 victory over Bergevi in the first set but dropped set two, which sent the match to the winner-take-all third set. Bergevi won the third set, 6-2, to claim the match.

Arant battled at No. 3, dropped the first set, 5-7, before succumbing in the final set, 1-6.

Stetson (7-2) earned victories in the No. 4 and 5 flights to claim the match victory, but Mercer's Wayenburg came away with a 6-3, 7-5 victory in straight sets over Sven Thiergard.
