Bailey Pattison threw her first collegiate no hitter against Georgia State on Saturday
MACON, Ga. – Sophomore right-hander Bailey Pattison threw her first collegiate no-hitter as the Mercer softball team picked up an 8-0 run-rule victory over Georgia State in its second game of the day in the Black & Orange Challenge Saturday afternoon at Sikes Field.
Pattison was spectacular from start to finish in the second game as she allowed only two walks over 5.0 innings of work while striking out three. The Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., native needed just 50 pitches to improve to 5-1 on the season and pick up the first shutout of the season for Mercer.
Danielle Castleberry led the Bears offensive efforts on the day with a pair of multi-hit games and a team-high four hits. She added three runs, an RBI and a stolen base on the afternoon. Rookies Diamond Williams and Rachel Baker also shined at the plate. Williams finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Baker recorded a hit in each game to combine for a 2-for-5 outing. The Huntsville, Ala., native showed off her strength once again with her second home run in as many days and drove in four runs on the day.
Game One: Bryant 7, Mercer 4
Mercer pushed the first run of the game across in the bottom of the first when Micayla Rood scored on a sacrifice fly by Allie Jones.
The Bulldogs responded with a run in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1 before taking the lead in the following inning. Bryant scored four runs in the top of the third with the big blow coming on a two-run home run by Jenna Gardner.
The Bears clawed their way back within two in the home half that started with a Bree Comer double. Rood singled and stole a base to put two runners in scoring position for Elisa Rosado. She plated Comer with an RBI groundout before Castleberry punched a single through the left side to score Rood.
Bryant added two in the following inning and contained the Mercer offense to just one run in the remainder of the game to come away with the 7-4 win.
Game Two: Mercer 8, Georgia State 0 (5 Innings)
Mercer took out its frustrations from the first game out on Georgia State in the first inning as the home team gained a six-run advantage after the first frame. Rood and Rosado led off the inning with a pair of base hits before a fielder's choice put runners on the corners for Jones. Jones shot a single to left to open the scoring before stealing second to keep the pressure on GSU. Abby Walsh singled in Jones and Castleberry after firing the offering back up the middle to make it a 3-0 lead. Williams was hit by a pitch before Baker mashed her second home run in as many days two batters later to extend the Bears' lead to 6-0.
That would be all the cushion Pattison would need as she would go on to retire 14-of-the-final-15 GSU hitters she would face after a one-out walk in the first inning. The Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., native posted back-to-back 1-2-3 innings before issuing a leadoff walk to Emily Brown in the fourth inning. She rebounded quickly, though, as Pattison needed just six pitches to retire the next three Panther batters to get out of the inning. She worked an efficient fifth inning as well, needing just nine pitches to get out of the inning.
The Bears added to their lead in the second inning when Castleberry reached on a two-out base knock. She advanced to second on the play thanks to a defensive miscue by Georgia State and scored on another error that put Jones on first. Jones stole second and third to get into scoring position, but she was stranded on third.
Castleberry led off the bottom of the fifth with a sharp single to left before Jones reached on a third blunder by the Panthers. She stole second to get into scoring position before Walsh ended the game with an RBI single as the Bears locked up the 8-0 victory.
