Mercer will travel to No. 6 Florida on Sunday
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's tennis team was unable to stop their skid as it fell to North Florida, 5-2, on Friday afternoon.
Mercer (3-9) began the match by winning the doubles point for the just the fourth time this eason. At No. 3, Carver Arant and Lucas Wayenburg fell to Nilo Durante and Pilo Kotan, 4-6, to begin the match, but wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions helped the Bears clinch the doubles point.
At No. 2, Stathis Tsiranidis and David Georgadze topped the Osprey's Federico Nani and Jorge Nunez, 6-4. The Bears clinched the point with a triumph at No. 1 doubles as Olivier Stuart and Hugo Lobo earned a hard-fought 7-5 win.
Wayenburg extended Mercer's lead to 2-0 with a victory at No. 4 singles over Joe Ellis. The Velaux, France native won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
North Florida (5-0) was able to turn the tide and reel of five consecutive singles win to take the match. After wins in the No. 6 and No. 1 positions, the match was even at two apiece. Arant battled at No. 3 singles, but fell, 6-2, 5-7, 1-6, as North Florida took the lead.
The Bears were unable to defeat the Ospreys in the No. 2 and No. 5 flights despite both matches going the distance. Tsirandis was defeated by Durante, 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, while Georgadze lot to Nani, 6-4, 5-7, 2-6.
