Bears Drop Pair on Saturday

Mercer will conclude the Alabama State Tournament on Sunday
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Mercer softball team dropped a pair of games against Southern Miss and Nicholls State on Saturday.

Micayla Rood led the team with two hits out of the leadoff position, in addition to drawing a walk. Amanda Schwartz, Allie Jones and Elisa Rosado also contributed base hits to the offensive effort, while Jones, Danielle Castleberry and Abby Walsh all earned a free pass.
Game One: Southern Miss 10, Mercer 1
 Southern Miss scored three runs in the first inning to take an early lead and extended its advantage to five by the fourth inning.

A Jones single and a Wash walk started the home half of the fourth before a one-out hit by Schwartz loaded the bases. Sophie Sumner smacked a sacrifice fly to right center field to score Walsh for Mercer's first run of the game.

The Golden Eagles' offense continued to add runs throughout each of the final three innings, and the Bears were unable to keep up.
Game Two: Nicholls State 5, Mercer 0
Mercer's offensive struggles continued in the second game of the day as the Bears managed two hits in the night cap. Rosado broke up the no-hit bid in the fourth inning, and Rood added a single in the sixth.

Nicholls State managed to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning and pushed across three insurance runs in the third. The Colonels scored their final run of the game in the fourth inning.

» Jones recorded her 20th hit of the season.
» Castleberry saw her streak of eighth straight games with a multiple hits come to an end.
