Kylie Helm broke up the Yellow Jackets’ perfect game in the fifth inning
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer softball team fell to Georgia Tech in six innings, 11-1, on Wednesday evening at Sikes Field.
Â
Rookie Kylie Helm and junior Bree Comer both doubled in the game for Mercer, while rookie Elisa Rosado recorded a single. Helm's two-bagger spoiled the perfect game being thrown by Georgia Tech's Blake Neleman with one out in the fifth inning.
How It Happened
Mercer contained the GT offense in the first inning after Kenlie Harvey charged in from shortstop on a pop up to make the catch and alertly fired to first to double up the Yellow Jackets' baserunner. The visitors took a 3-0 lead in the second inning that was highlighted by a two-run home run by Lilly Hooper.
Â
Sophomore Bailey Pattison limited Georgia Tech to just one walk over the next two innings before the Yellow Jackets padded their lead in the fifth. The visiting team added an insurance run on an RBI double by Tricia Awald before Crosby Huckabay hit a three-run homer.
Â
Mercer responded in the home half of the fifth that started with Helm breaking up Neleman's run at a perfect game. The Anderson, Mo., native roped a double into the left-center field gap prior to Comer being called upon to pinch hit. With a 1-2 count, she shot the ball into left field and allowed pinch-runner Destiny Colgate to score Mercer's first run of the game.
Â
The Bears were unable to keep the momentum going as a grand slam by Breanna Roper put Georgia Tech comfortably ahead as it hung on for the win.
