Greco became the Chiefs’ all-time leading scorer in January
MACON, Ga. – With the initials of the man whose record he was trying to break written on his shoes, Mercer signee Jacksen Greco rose up from beyond the arc and calmly drained a three-pointer to become Sequoyah High School's all-time leading scorer in January.
Greco's triple put him in the history books as he surpassed Adam Benton's 1,501 career points, a mark that stood more than 25 years – untouched since he set it in 1994. Now, Benton would move down one spot as Greco forever etched his name into the Chiefs' record books.
Benton passed away in 2003 and his jersey hangs from the rafters of Sequoyah's historic gym – the War Lodge – and Greco knows the moment gave him a chance to honor someone who paved the way for him.Â
"Breaking the record meant everything to me," said Greco. "It was my goal since the ninth grade, and writing Adam's initials on my shoes was a way to recognize him and his greatness on the court."
What made the moment even sweeter? Greco's record breaking shot came against archrival Creekview. Just 17 minutes and 8.9 miles separate the two institutions. And, the Chiefs led from start to finish in the 77-64 victory.Â
With Creekview vs. Sequoyah being one of the biggest rivalries in North Georgia, it made breaking the record all the more special for Greco.
"The crowed was great that night," he stated. "It was electric inside the War Lodge."
Since that January moment, the Mercer signee added even more accolades before he comes to Macon and dons the Black and Orange. He was recently named the Cherokee Tribune Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Sequoyah competes in Class 6A, the Georgia High School Association's second highest classification. Greco also received Second Team All-State honors from HoopSeen and Kyle Sandy of Sandy's Spiel. Sandy also called Greco the best shooter in Class 6A.
For his career, Greco scored 1,752 points with 33 percent coming during his senior season.
With his high school complete and a few short months remaining until he steps foot on Mercer's campus to begin his college career, Greco looks forward to joining the Bears.
"At Mercer, I feel like I can fit in with everyone and see myself spending a lot of time with everyone I've met. I look forward to having fun the next four years and doing what I love at the collegiate level."
In similar fashion, head coach Greg Gary, who will begin his second campaign with the Bears during Greco's first college season, echoed his excitement to have the Hickory Flat native make the transition to Middle Georgia and putting on a Mercer uniform.
"We are very excited to have Jacksen as a part of our program," remarked Gary. "He comes from an excellent program and has learned from an outstanding coach in Coach Caden. Jacksen has a high basketball IQ with a great offensive skillset."
Greco and the rest of the 2020-21 signing class will suit up for the Bears this coming winter as Mercer looks to improve on the 17-15 (11-7 SoCon) record that it amassed in Greg Gary's first year at the helm.
