Grant stands 6-foot-10 and is from Sylacauga, Alabama.
MACON, Ga. – Shannon Grant, a 6-foot-10-inch center from Sylacauga, Ala. signed his National Letter of Intent and officially became the fourth member of Mercer's 2020 recruiting class, head coach Greg Gary announced on Monday morning.
"I'm very excited that Shannon is joining our family," said Gary. "He has tremendous size and is very skilled. I'm looking forward to getting him to campus."
Grant, who attended Sylacauga High School, played three years of varsity basketball and became the second Sylacauga player since 2011 to sign with a Division I program. He was a two-time all-state selection and three-time all-county honoree. He was named to the all-region squad twice and was also the County Most Valuable Player and an Alabama Allstar.
During the first week of his senior season, Grant was named Player of the Week by The Daily Home. He poured in 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in Sylacauga's season-opening win over Central of Coosa County.
Following the conclusion of his senior season, Grant picked up second team all-state honors from the Alabama Sportswriters Association.
While he had multiple 30-point games, Grant's best performance was a 20-point, 20-rebound game in a big win over rival Childersburg High School.
In three seasons of varsity basketball, he helped Sylacauga to an impressive 75 wins compared to only 25 losses. He led the Aggies to the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 5A State Championship with a narrow win over Eufaula, 59-58 in 2018.
The Aggies advanced to the elite eight in 2019, and in 2020, Sylacauga Aggies defeated Woodlawn and Tallassee before bowing out to Ramsay.
On the AAU circuit, Grant spent one season with the Atlanta Celtics and helped them to titles at the Battle on the Beach, Best of the South, Alabama Hoops Fest and Dallas Adidas Nationals.
At the 2019 edition of the Best of the South, Grant posted three double-doubles and was named to the 17U All-Tournament team along with teammate Sedrick Pettway.Â
Grant – the fourth member of Mercer's recruiting class – joins Jacksen Greco, Andrew Thomas and Jovan Tucker, all of whom signed in November.
