Kusnyer spent two years with the Bears and drained 109 three-pointers.
MACON, Ga. – We all know about the great accomplishments that Mercer student-athletes have achieved during their time as a Bear, but what are they up to after they graduate? Today, we take a look inside former Mercer men's basketball player EJ Kusnyer's' life and his career after Mercer.
Kusnyer spent two seasons in the Black & Orange and had a stellar senior season with an average of 11.2 points per game and hot shooting from three-point range. He hit 107-of-274 attempts from downtown, ranking him second in the country. When he graduated, Kusnyer ranked second in career triples made with 190 despite only spending two seasons at Mercer.
Following his graduation, Kusnyer signed a professional basketball contract with the Rotterdam Challengers of Holland's Eredivisie League. He recently sat down to talk about Mercer and life after basketball with MercerBears.com.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM YOUR TIME WITH MERCER BASKETBALL?
"I have a lot of great memories. We had a special group of guys during my two years at Mercer, but the stretch where we beat Alabama and Auburn back-to-back on the road is probably my favorite memory."
FOR SOME BACKGROUND, WHAT WAS YOUR MAJOR AT MERCER?
"I was a communications studies major with a business administration minor. I was a transfer student, so it gave me the best opportunity to graduate before my eligibility was up and to pursue graduate school down the road."
HAVE YOU EARNED ANY ADDITIONAL DEGREES (MASTERS, PHD, CERTIFICATES) ETC. SINCE GRADUATING?
"I started my MBA but have not completed it yet."
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE SINCE GRADUATING? (LIFE, CAREER ETC.)
"Upon graduating I embarked on a five year professional basketball career. I played in the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, Hungary and Spain. After my first season, I made the decision to represent myself as a player-agent. It was not the norm back then, and it still isn't today, but I felt like I could look out for my interest better than any agency could or would.Â
When I retired as a player, I was offered a job to become an agent. At first, I was resistant to the idea since I wasn't fond of agents [at the time]. After more consideration, and great advice from my wife, Jenn, I realized I could use my experiences to help players and give them the type of representation I always desired. I'm fortunate to have had some great athletes who have trusted me with their careers and now five years into the business, I'm co-owner of Beyond Athlete Management."Â
WHAT SPORTS ARE YOU INVOLVED WITH AS AN AGENT? IS IT CHALLENGING?
"We represent NBA, NFL and FIBA Athletes, as well as college coaches. It is notoriously a tough business, so much so, that the New York Times did a story on the difficulties of finding success representing NBA players where I was featured as one of the few that had found early success. The truth is, the success we've had can be attributed to our focus of putting together a great team of people that understand what the modern day athlete needs and wants, and the importance of working with great athletes who are also great people. At the end of the day, the agency, and an agent, are only as good as its athletes."
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS?
"In 10 years I still see myself representing athletes. The goal is for us to see athletes beyond their playing career, so I'm excited for that will look like 10 years later. I also have three children (ages 5, 3 and 1), so I hope to be coaching or supporting them in whatever they enjoy doing!"
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS FOR THE COMING YEARS?
"My goals are to continue establishing Beyond Athlete Management as a brand that empowers Athletes and helps set a new standard for athlete representation."
