Bears beat Jacksonville, win third in a row
MACON, Ga. – Behind a barrage of shots in the contest, the Mercer Bears took down their guests, Jacksonville, in a 1-0 nonconfernce match at Betts Stadium.
Mercer (6-6-1, 2-1-1 SoCon) used a Dylan Gaither goal in the 53rd minute to pull away from the Dolphins (3-9, 2-3 ASUN) following a closely contested opening 45. Ousman Jabang, fresh off of a brace in the win on Saturday, provided the assist on the lone score of the match. Gaither's goal was his eighth of the campaign, which continues to pace the Mercer attack. Kadeem Agard led the Mercer offense with four shots.
Jacksonville, never fully out of the game, made Trevor McMullen earn each one of his five saves in the contest. The Dolphins' last threat, a shot by Reed Davis, was thwarted by a McMullen stop in the 71st minute.
McMullen's clean sheet was his fourth of the season, and his second in three matches. Since his debut against Furman, he has yet to surrender a goal in the friendly confines of Betts Stadium.
The two sides combined for an impressive 21 shots, Mercer's 12 included five on target. Agard and Gaither each registered a pair of shots on target.
With the win, Mercer is enjoying its longest winning streak of the season with three consecutive wins, two of which were shutouts.
On Saturday, the Bears will close out the home portion of the regular season by welcoming the Belmont Bruins to Betts Stadium. Kickoff with the guests from Music City is slated for 2 p.m.
