Mercer upsets Bruins in 2OT
MACON, Ga. -- This afternoon's visitors to Betts Stadium, the Belmont Bruins, could taste the regular season title - with a win, it was theirs to take. The homestanding Mercer Bears ruined the celebration.
Getting Mercer (7-6-1, 3-1-1 SoCon) on the board before the break, Nick Wanzer scored an unassisted one in the 35th minute to take a 1-0 lead over the visiting Bruins (10-4-1, 4-2 SoCon). Following a foul on the box, Mercer doubled the lead when Angel Gonzalez buried the ball past BU's keeper in the 52nd minute.
Belmont battled back from the margin and struck back with a successful PK of their own when Niccolo Dagnoni converted for the score. Nearing the end of regulation, BU leveled the match at two aside when Case Cox slid it behind Trevor McMullen.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Trevor Martineau ended the game after he was assisted by Kadeem Agard and Kevin Kim just eight minutes into the fourth frame.
McMullen stopped four shots and saw six come his way.
Mercer ends the home slate of the regular season having won four in a row at the friendly confines of Betts Stadium.
The Bears will play another Nashville side, Lipscomb, on Tuesday night from the Music City. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
