Mercer, App State to tangle at Hawkins Arena

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's basketball team will continue the three game opening homestand of the 2021-22 season with a Thursday showdown with App State.

Preseason Favorites
Mercer was picked by both the league coaches and media to cut down the nets in March in Asheville, N.C. From the perspective of the coaches, the Bears collected five of the eight first-place votes, and eight of the 15 from the media.

New Season, New Bears
There will be plenty of new faces at Hawkins Arena for the 2021-22 season, as Mercer welcomes eight new student-athletes – Kinley Fisher, Endia Banks, Erin Houpt, Erin Gutierrez, Kassidy Jones, Nigeria Harkless, Ashlee Locke and Lauren McNamara-Clement – to campus.

Last Time Out
Mercer welcomed Wake Forest for the season opener on Tuesday night, falling by a 68-55 margin.
The Bears were unable to keep up the momentum from a hot first quarter and hold off the Demon Deacons' scoring run that suffocated them. Mercer shot just under 34% from the field and 66.7% from the free throw line. Jaron Dougherty led the Bears with 18 points in nearly 36 minutes on the floor.

Series History
This is the fourh all-time meeting between the Bears and Mountaineers, with the series being dominated by App State. The visitors have taken all three prior contests, with the last coming in the 2019-20 campaign, a 77-68 win for App State in Boone, North Carolina.

Scouting the Mountaineers
App State is coming into Hawkins Arena with a 1-0 mark following a 75-41 defeat of Lees-McRae in their opener on Tuesday night in Boone. Michaela Porter led the Mountaineers with 14 points in just over 25 minutes of action, along with a career-best six steals and nine boards. Faith Alston added 13 points of her own for App State in the win.
