Bears drop a heartbreaker to the Eagles
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis team dropped their match, 4-0, to Georgia Southern on Wednesday afternoon.
The match was closer than the score looks. Mercer was up one set in two matches and had just forced a third set in an unfinished match.
In No. 1 singles, Maeva Roquebert won the first set 6-3. She was looking to when her match but was tied at 5-5 in the second set before the match went unfinished. Kristin Yordanova won her first set 7-5 in No. 6 singles. She was trailing in the second set but the match went unfinished.
After falling in the first set, 7-5, Mary Courville answered back in No. 3 singles. She came back and won the second set 6-2, forcing a third set but the third set never got underway and the match went unfinished.
The Bears took the top flight in doubles to open the day. Courville and Roquebert won 6-3 over Charlotte Van Diemen and Sophie Wagemaker. After dropping No. 3 singles, 6-4, the doubles point came down to the second doubles team. However, the Bear came out on the short side of things and lost 7-5.
Mercer continued to battle in singles action. Lekha Varudandi and Alara Hollyfield lost close-set ones before falling in the second set. Lauren Rich competed in No. 4 singles put it was not enough for the Bears.
