Mercer downs Jacksonville State on Wednesday night
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University women's tennis team won its third straight match on Wednesday afternoon with a 5-2 win over Jacksonville State.
The Bears looked to be getting the jump in the doubles as the duo of Ericka Chavarria and Lauren Rich won 6-1 in No. 3 doubles. Needing to take one of the final two doubles matches for the point, the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State claimed both matches taking the doubles point.
Entering singles, Mercer slowly started to the comeback. Mary Courville got the Bears their first point of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win in No. 3 singles. Lauren Rich followed with a win of her own. Rich won 7-6, 6-2, in No. 4 singles.
The Bears continued to win in singles and took the 3-1 lead after Maeva Roquebert claimed a victory in No. 1 singles. Roquebert won 6-3 in set one, before falling in set two. In the winner take all set, Roquebert took the third set 6-4.
The lead was trimmed to one, 3-2 after Harriet Hamilton won in No. 2 singles for Jacksonville State.
Needing to take one of the final two matches to win the match, Lekha Varudandi dropped the first set. However, she responded and won set two, 6-4, forcing a third set. Varudandi clinched the match for the Bears with a 6-0 third-set win.
The Bears added their fifth point of the day with a win in No. 6 singles. Kristin Yordanova defeated Balsen Kaya, 6-4, 6-2, and the Bears won 5-2 over Jacksonville State.
