
Bears Fall to Conference Foes, Furman

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Bears fell to the Furman Paladins, 18-12, in Five Star Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Â

The Bears went down early with Furman taking a 2-0 lead. The Bears first goal came at the 25:28 mark when Lily Morin's 8-meter went past the Furman goalie. Three minutes later, Hailey Rhatigan found the back of the net with the unassisted goal. Furman would take the one goal lead but only for one minute. Chloe Schaeffer snuck one past Furman to tie the game at two. Lily Morin scored her second goal of the game with an assist from Rhatigan. The Paladins would score three straight to take a 7-4 lead. Hailey Rhatigan would score the last goal for the Bears in the first half to make the score 8-5.

Shannon Urey opened the scoring in the second half with an 8-meter. Sami Van Slyke continued the scoring for Mercer with an assisted goal from Lily Morin. A minute later, Morin got her third goal past Furman to tie the game at eight each. Schaeffer gave the Black and Orange the lead with an unassisted goal less than four minutes into the second half. Furman scored three straight to take a two point lead. The Paladins grew their lead by six with four more goals. Eva Thorn would end Furman's scoring run with a free-position goal. Furman would go on a 3-0 run to take an 18-10 lead. Lily Morin would snake through the defense to put one in the back of the net. After a Furman foul, Chloe Schaeffer would put one in to score the last goal for the Bears.

NOTABLESÂ
- Lily Morin's four goals against the Paladins gives the midfielder her eighth multi-goal performance of the 2021 season. Two of her goals came from free-position shots. Morin also led the team with three caused turnovers.
- Midfielders Chloe Schaeffer and Hailey Rhatigan also had multi-goal performances. Schaeffer followed Morin with three goals and Rhatigan had two.
- Goalie Iseabal Cryne saw all 60 minutes in the cage. She led the team with three groundballs and had nine saves.
- Erin Degnan and Lily Morin led the Black and Orange with seven draw controls.
