He comes to Mercer from Tallahassee Community College.
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's basketball staff announced the additional of versatile guard Shawn Walker Jr. to the program on Monday afternoon.
Walker Jr., a six-foot-six-inch guard, played his freshman season at George Washington University before transferring to Tallahassee Community College for the 2020-21 campaign.
"Shawn is a very skilled guard with good size," remarked head coach Greg Gary. "He can score the basketball in a variety of ways and was an integral part of helping Tallahassee Community College win 19 games and a conference championship. His skillset will be a welcome addition to our backcourt next season."
Walker Jr. made his collegiate debut against Morgan State on November 16, 2019 and contributed seven points to go along with six boards and two thefts in his first start for the Colonials. In A-10 play, Walker Jr. earned the starting nod against Rhode Island on February 8, 2020 and poured in a career best 14 points.
As a sophomore at Tallahassee, he averaged 11.2 points per game and found his rhythm from the floor, shooting 48.6 percent (69-of-142) and a stellar 47 percent (31-of-66) from beyond the arc. Walker Jr. was nearly automatic at the charity stripe, missing just 12 times. He reached double figures in 12 of the Eagles' 22 contests and contributed 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 5-of-8 from downtown in a March 9 win over Chipola College. Walker Jr. led the Eagles to a 19-3 record and scored 18 points in Tallahassee's 82-57 romp of Pensacola State College, which gave the Eagles a second consecutive Panhandle Conference Championship.
A native of Elizabeth City, N.C., Walker Jr. began his high school career at Wesleyan Christian Academy and led the Trojans to a 55-11 record and ranking of fourth among 3A North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) programs. Walker Jr. was also an all-academic honoree during his time at Wesleyan. He transferred to Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School in Virginia Beach, Va., for his senior season and led the Crusaders to their first state championship since 1994 with an 18-point performance in the championship game. Walker Jr. earned finals MVP honors.
He is the son of Tonja Jacobs and Shawn Walker Sr. Walker Sr. is the head coach at NCAA Division II Elizabeth City State University and the former head coach at Grambling State University, an NCAA Division I program located in Grambling, La.
Walker Jr. is Mercer's third member of the Bears' recruiting class, joining November signees Quay Primas (Macon, Ga. / Central High School) and Javian Mosley (Macon, Ga. / Westside High School / Florida State University Schools).
