Allie Jones hit her first home run of the season in game one

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer softball team dropped a pair against Western Carolina, 6-4 and 7-0, at Sikes Field on Saturday.

The Bears totaled five hits on the day, highlighted by a three-run home run from senior Allie Jones. Elisa Rosado, Micayla Rood, Tori Ash and Adele Braun also tallied base knocks on the afternoon. Braun reached base four times against the Catamounts as the freshman third baseman drew three walks in the doubleheader.

Game One: Western Carolina 6, Mercer 4

Western Carolina opened the scoring in the second inning as Addie Pate hit a two-run home run to put the visitors ahead, 2-0. Bailey Huneycutt and Kailey McNeil hit back-to-back homers in the following inning to double the Catamounts lead, 4-0. WCU added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-0 lead.

Ash broke up Savannah Rice's no-hit bid in the fifth inning with a one-out single to left center. That sparked the Bears' offense as Rosado and Rood strung together two more hits to load the bases. Kylie Helm plated the first run of the game with an RBI ground out that scored pinch runner Atira McGowan. With two outs, Jones stepped up to the plate and smoked a three-run bomb over the wall in right center to cut the deficit to two, 6-4.

Neither offense was able to muster any more scoring chances, however, as the visitors claimed a 6-4 win in game one.

Game Two: Western Carolina 7, Mercer 0

Huneycutt hit a two-run homer to kick-start a five-run first inning for Western Carolina in game two. Jayme Eilers continued the Catamounts' strong effort in the circle as she held the Bears without a hit until Braun lined a two-out single in the fourth inning. Pate hit her second home run of the day in the top of the inning to extend WCU's lead to seven runs and capped the scoring for the afternoon.

The Bears will close out their series with Western Carolina with the series finale on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
