Felipe Haase will play with Chile
MACON, Ga. – Mercer basketball fans will get their mid-summer fix starting Tuesday evening when Felipe Haase takes the court with the Chilean National Team as part of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Pre-Qualifiers.
Chile will compete in Group B along with Bolivia, Nicaragua and Paraguay with the top two teams in the group advancing to the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers. 12 teams that automatically made the qualifiers will be joined from four teams advancing from the pre-qualifiers – the Bahamas and Cuba from Group A and the winner and runner-up from Group B. The 16-team field will then be divided into four groups of four to play home-and-away contests with the three top teams from each group advancing to the second round of the qualifiers. From that list of 12 squads, seven teams, the three with the best record from each group plus a fourth team, will qualify for the main event.
32 total teams from four confederations will play in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, which will take place in six cities across three countries – Indonesia, Japan and Philippines – from Aug. 25-Sept. 10, 2023.
Haase, a 6-foot-9-inch forward, established himself as one of the most versatile forwards in the Southern Conference in 2020-21, averaging 11.9 points and a team-best 7.8 rebounds per game. The Osorno, Chile native immediately made his impact with the Orange & Black known by pulling down 15 boards in his 2020-21 season debut against North Georgia (Nov. 25) and turning in a double-double of 13 points and a career-best 16 rebounds in a buzzer-beating win over Georgia Southern on Dec. 13. He helped the Bears make their first Southern Conference championship game appearance under Greg Gary, averaging 13.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in the four-game tournament run with a double-double in both the conference semifinals and winner-take-all championship battle. Haase shot at a 46.7 percent clip (126-of-270) during his redshirt junior campaign and found a rhythm from downtown, connecting on a 39.3 percent (59-of-150) of his three-point attempts.
