Gettins played at the University of Alabama.
MACON, Ga. – Head Softball Coach Lindsay Fico announced Friday that former University of Alabama standout pitcher Courtney Gettins will join the softball staff as an assistant coach.
"Courtney has played and coached at a high level, and both of those things will be a huge asset to our program," said Fico. "She knows what it takes to be the best. Her work ethic is tremendous, but it's her ability to communicate with pitchers and constantly get the most out of them when they're in the circle that I love most. She brings a winning attitude and championship mentality to Mercer, and I can't wait to see her contributions."
Added Gettins: "I would like to thank Lindsay [Fico] and Mercer University for this amazing opportunity. I am eager to get on campus and get to work. This is going to be a fun journey as we move forward. Having the opportunity to create a culture and climate for us to be successful in the classroom, on the field and as people is something I take great pride in. I am excited to be on this journey with Lindsay and Cara [Parker]."
Gettins began her collegiate career at Florida Southwestern where she was a two-time National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) First Team All-American and National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American. The 2016 NJCAA Division I National Pitcher of the Year went 35-1 with a 1.46 earned run average as a sophomore and was a stellar 39-6 with a 1.45 ERA in her first collegiate season.
After 74 wins in two JUCO seasons, she signed with one of the most storied NCAA Division I softball programs, the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. As a junior in 2018, Gettins threw a five-inning no-hitter in her 'Bama debut, shutting down the Lamar Cardinals to become the first pitcher in Crimson Tide history to toss a no-no in her debut. She posted a 14-5 record and 2.46 ERA in 26 outings. The following year, she went 6-2 with a 3.80 ERA, bringing her career win-loss record with the Crimson Tide to 20-7. She boasted a career 2.90 ERA.
A native of Hastings, New Zealand, she played in two U-19 World Championships and three Open Women's World Series.
Gettins began her coaching career at Jacksonville University as a graduate assistant and helped the Dolphins go 15-11 before COVID-19 canceled the remainder of the 2020 campaign. She spent 2021 season as the volunteer assistant coach at Texas and helped the Longhorns reach an NCAA Super Regional in Stillwater, Okla. The Longhorns went 43-14 overall but dropped a best-of-three series to Oklahoma State in the super regional.
At Texas, she mentored second baseman Janae Jefferson, a Third Team NFCA All-American who was just the third Longhorn in program history to earn the prestigious accolade.
Gettins graduated from Alabama in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in human environmental sciences.
