Mercer shot even par as a team in the final round.
PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. – The Mercer Bears shot even par in the final round of the Golfweek Challenge and set a 54-hole program record, finishing 29-under par en route to a second-place finish.
The Bears accumulated 835 total strokes, beating the previous record of 841, originally set in the fall of 2015.
Although the Bears began the day with the lead, the Delaware Blue Hens played an incredible round of golf, shooting 18-under par to claim the team title with a final score of 31-under par. Mercer finished second, carding a 30-under par. Campbell (-19), Temple (-17) and Jacksonville State (-17) concluded the top five. Wofford's Harry Jones claimed the individual title with an impressive score of 199, 17 strokes under par.
"This wasn't the way we wanted to end the tournament," said head coach Jason Payne, but we have to give Delaware credit. It was a good tournament for us overall with three guys among the top 10."
Jonathan Parker led the Orange & Black in the final round, carding a 1-under par. He entered the turn at even par and began the back nine with birdies on two of the first three holes. He made up for a bogey on the 15th hole with a birdie on 16, but he shot 1-over par on the final hole to finish with 71 for the day. Parker concluded the 54-hole tournament tied for 26th.
Tobias Jonsson and Jay Spivey both shot even par to end the tournament. Jonsson had an impressive start with three birdies before the turn, but he struggled on the back nine with four bogeys and only one birdie. Despite the difficult finish, he finished tied for fourth alongside Delaware's Roberto Nieves.
Spivey also put together a solid score on the front nine. After a bogey on the first hole, he rebounded with back-to-back birdies on the fourth and fifth holes, respectively. He entered the turn with momentum after a birdie on the ninth hole, and he quickly bettered his standing by finishing 1-under par on the 11th and 12th holes. Double bogeys on two holes – the 16th and 18th – left him with an even 72 on the scorecard. He tied for sixth with a total score of 207, 9-under par, after three rounds.
Martin Plukka tied his teammate for sixth overall after carding a 1-over par on the final day of golf. He entered the turn 1-under and sat 2-under with six holes remaining, but a bogey on 14 and a double bogey on the final 18 gave him a 73 for the round.
