Bears Have Record-Setting Night Against Milligan
11/11/2022 8:53:00 PM | Men's Basketball
118 points scored is the most in program history
MACON, Ga. – With 118 points, the Mercer men's basketball team set a new program record for points scored in a single game on Friday night against Milligan at Hawkins Arena. The final score was 118-64, securing the first win of the regular season for the Bears. It was the first time the Bears won by at least 50 points since December 28, 2019, also against Milligan.
Less than three minutes into the first half, the Bears took the lead and never relinquished control. Head coach Greg Gary utilized his bench early, and the substitutes produced 45 points. All 12 players who logged minutes scored, and five players scored in double figures. It was the first time since February 8, 2021 against Samford that Mercer had five double-digit scorers.
"It was good to be able to play a lot of people," Gary said. "They work so hard in practice. Sometimes as coaches, we get so worried about the grind that they need to have some fun."
Jalyn McCreary, Shawn Walker Jr., Michael Zanoni, and David Craig all set new career-highs in scoring and FGM. McCreary set new career-highs in these categories against ECU on Tuesday and only needed one half to best those numbers on Friday. The redshirt junior from Marietta, Georgia, was one rebound shy of a double-double. Freshman TJ Grant was active around the rim, collecting 12 rebounds in his first appearance for the Bears.
Walker Jr. had a career night, draining five from three-point range which was another career-high for the senior. He led the team in points and 3-point FGs.
The Bears shot 60% from the field and 88% from the free throw line. Senior Diego Rivera was a perfect 4-4 from the line. Mercer managed 31 assists on 46 field goals, including a team-high nine from graduate transfer Luis Hurtado Jr.
UP NEXT: The Bears will travel to face Georgia State on Tuesday, November 15 at 7 p.m. at the Georgia State Convocation Center. This will be the 72nd meeting between the two teams, with Georgia State leading the series 37-34.
"It's a totally different opponent," Gary explained. "Jonas will have them ready there at Georgia State. We've played them before and know they're very tough physically."
