Navy too much for Mercer in Annapolis
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Seven consecutive goals scored by the host Midshipmen proved a barrier too big for Mercer to come back from, as Navy (1-1) won the battle by a 15-5 scoreline at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Mercer (1-2) opened the second half's scoring when Cole Leggett fed the ball to Carl Klepper, who shot it past the Mids' Pat Ryan less than a minute into the third quarter. Nearly two minutes later, Mercer closed the gap to just five when Cole Leggett notched an unassisted tally for the Bears' second score. Following three unanswered by the host Midshipmen, Ashton Wood fired an unassisted one past Ryan for the score with a little bit more than 3 minutes to go in the third.
The Bears scored twice more, both by Sean Goldsmith at the 14:47 and 13:38 marks to round out the scoring for Mercer.
While charged with the loss, Collin Kelley stopped 16 shots in an hour of action in the cage for Mercer.
On Tuesday, Mercer will meet Jacksonville in a nonconference showdown in Savannah, Ga. Opening faceoff with the Dolphins from the Hostess City is set for 6 p.m.
