2/26/2022 10:02:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Mercer will begin the post season in Asheville on Friday, March. 4th.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Kamar Robertson led the Mercer men's basketball team with a season-high 18 points, but the Wofford Terriers used a 22-4 to open the second half to defeat the Bears, 74-67, in Saturday night's regular season finale.
Mercer moved to 15-16 overall and 8-10 in the Southern Conference, while the Terriers improved to 18-12 and 10-8 in league games. The Bears will enter next week's Southern Conference Tournament as the No. 7 seed and will battle the 10th-seeded Western Carolina Catamounts at 7:30 p.m. on March 4. Wofford currently sits in a tie with Samford for third place in the league standings.
Wofford held a 6-2 lead only 2:11 into the contest, but James Glisson III scored five consecutive points to give the Orange & Black the lead less than 90 seconds later. Mercer was never able to pull away in the opening minutes but withstood multiple charges by the pesky Terriers. After Max Klesmit tied the contest at 18 before the 10-minute mark, Shawn Walker Jr. found Jacksen Greco for a layup to return the lead to the visitors. Walker Jr. finished with six assists on the night, one off his career-high.
As the half went on, Mercer held a 23-18 lead at the under-eight media timeout and extended its lead to nine, 34-25, by the intermission. Felipe Haase led the way with five of the Bears' final 11 points, while Robertson, Walker Jr., and Glisson III also contributing.
The opening minutes of the second half were unkind to the Bears as the Terriers began the period with a 10-0 run to regain the advantage, 35-34. Following the first media stoppage, the hot shooting continued for the Terriers as they continued to outscore the Bears, having done so by an 18-point margin over the first 8:15 of the second stanza.
Despite trailing by nine, 47-38, the Bears clawed their way back, tying the regular season finale at 51-all after several steals capitalized by Glisson III forcing a BJ Mack turnover and slamming one home with 7:14 to play.
The Bears scored just nine points in the next 5:54 but allowed Wofford to build only a five-point cushion, 65-60. Mercer got no closer than four in the final 1:34, and Wofford ultimately secured a 74-67 win.
Robertson led the Bears with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting and was 6-of-10 at the charity stripe. Felipe Haase followed with 15 points, connecting on 6 of his 11 tries, while Glisson III contributed 12 points. Glisson III missed just one of his six attempts from the field. Despite the loss, Mercer shot 55.3 percent (26-of-47) from the floor, its second-best shooting percentage of the season.
BJ Mack scored a game-high 26 points. Mack made nine total shots, eight of which were inside the three-point line. He shot 87.5 percent from the free throw line, going 7-of-8 on the night. Max Klesmit was 6-of-13 from the field, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. Klesmit was a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe for 21 total points.
