Mercer Men’s Basketball to Face Western Carolina in SoCon Basketball Tournament

MACON, Ga. – Mercer's men's basketball team is the seventh seed and will square off against tenth-seeded Western Carolina University in game two on Friday, March 4 at the 2022 Ingles Southern Conference Basketball Championship. Tip-off time at the Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, N.C., is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (ET).Â

Mercer finished the regular season at 15-16 overall and 8-10 in the SoCon. Western Carolina is 11-20 overall and 5-13 in conference play. The Bears split the season series against the Catamounts - winning at Hawkins Arena 72-64 on January 22 and losing 69-65 when the Bears traveled to Western Carolina on February 19.

Western Carolina (17-12, 9-8) was led by career nights from Marlow Gilmore and Cam Bacote who both eclipsed the 20-point plateau. They got off to a rough start in the opening half and then withstood a comeback by VMI for an 82-73 win over the Keydets in the regular season finale on Saturday on Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center.Â
WCU, which outscored VMI 46-to-18 in the paint, improved to 11-20 overall and 5-13 in league play while VMI dropped to 16-14 and 9-9.Â
Gilmore tallied a career-best 25 points, going 12-for-13 from the field and 1-for-3 at the free throw line. He logged the first double-double of his WCU career with 14 rebounds with seven each on the offensive and defensive glass. Gilmore overshadowed his previous career-best of 19 points against Mercer the previous Saturday.Â
 Bacote tallied 23 points, going 9-for-16 from the field and 2-for-5 at the free throw line. He also distributed a game-high seven assists and pulled down four rebounds. He edged his previous career-best of 21 points against ETSU on Feb. 2.Â
After missing the previous two games due to injury, Nicholas Robinson returned to the lineup and contributed 12 points with six rebounds. Marvin Price also contributed with 11 points off the bench.Â
