Mercer falls to Bison in Saturday setback
MACON, Ga. – In the second game of the season, Mercer couldn't mount a comeback to counter a four-goal streak from Bucknell at Five Star Stadium on Saturday.
Sean Goldsmith's seven-point (4 G/ 3 A) day wasn't enough for Mercer (1-1) against Bucknell (1-0) as the visitors took a 16-14 decision.
13 of the game's 30 goals came in the first half, including three from Carl Klepper to pace the Mercer attack. The sides nearly alternated goals in the first 30 minutes until two straight by the Bison gave them the lead at the break. Off the third quarter's opening faceoff, Ashton Woods fed the ball to Goldsmith, who buried it past Bucknell's Max Nolan to knot the contest at seven.
Throughout the game's first three stanzas, Mercer found ways to come back but could never quite take the lead from the Bison. With just under 12 minutes left in the contest, a Taylor Dooley goal tied it at 12, but the visitors countered with four consecutive to distance themselves from the Bears.
Late scores from Dooley and Klepper closed the gap but were not enough as the Bison ran the waning moments of the clock to secure the result.
Mercer will return to action next Saturday, February 12, when they will face Navy in Annapolis, Md. Game time with the Midshipmen is slated for Noon from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
