Bears Lose Twin Bill

Mercer defeated by UNCG
Greensboro, N.C.  – In the conference season opener, the Mercer Bears drop twin bill against UNCG. Â
UNCG 15, MERCER 4
Annie Potter would be the first on base with a walk in the top of the first. Next at bat, Diamond Williams recorded the first single of the game through the right side. Despite having two Bears on base, the offense would not be unable to record a run.
The Spartans recorded eight runs in the bottom of the first starting with a walk by Cumbie followed by back-to- back doubles from Brown and Matthijs. Matthijs' double scored Brown and Cumbie before a walk from Batten and homer from Loftin extended the lead to five. UNCG 5, Mercer 0. Gontram homered immediately after Loftin. Three Spartans reached on a fielding error, a dropped fly, and a fielder's choice. A double from Cumbie scored Lagrama before a fly out from Brown scored Shipley. UNCG 8, Mercer 0.
In the top of the second, Grace Prom and Sophie Sumner recorded singles, without prevail.
Batten opened the bottom of the second with a home run, the only score of the inning. UNCG 9, Mercer 0.
Alyssa Woods and Kenlie Harvey singled. Woods was able to score on the single from Harvey after stealing second a few throws prior. This inning also included a walk from Prom.Â
Shipley led off the bottom of the third with a single followed by a homerun from Cumbie. Batten singled, scoring Brown who doubled earlier. UNCG 12, Mercer 0. A homerun from Gontram scored Batten and Loftin. 14-point lead. Tori Hedgecock entered the game as the pitcher, giving up two singles before the end of the inning.Â

Sumner led the top of the fourth reaching on error. A single from Elisa Rosado put two Bears on base with a ground ball from Woods advancing them both. A single from Potter scored Sumner. Rosado and Potter scored off a reach for Williams due to a fielding error. UNCG 15, Mercer 4.
The Spartans nor the Bears would record any additional runs.
UNCG 12, MERCER 4Â Â Â Â
The Spartan would be the first on the board. An early hit on Cumbie by the pitcher moved her on base before a home run from Brown scored her. Matthijs tripled and scored on a fly ball from Loftin. Gontram's home run gave the Spartans a four-point lead going into the second inning.Â
Cumbie walked as the lead of the second and scored again on a Brown homerun. UNCG 6, Mercer 0Â
Tori Ash recorded the first hit of the game for the Bears in the top of the third. A walk from Rachel Baker and a single from Laudino loaded the bases. Woods reached first on fielder's choice, with the Spartans getting Ash out at home. However, a single from Potter scored Laudino and Baker putting the Bears within four. UNCG 6, Mercer 2.
A homerun from Lagrama gave the Spartans a slightly larger lead of five.Â
Kylie Helm and Harvey both singled in the top of the fourth, but the score remained the same.
Cumbie walked as the lead of the bottom of the fourth. Three straight triples from Brown, Matthijs and Batten scored Cumbie and Brown. Gotram homered bringing Batten and Matthijs home, extending their lead to ten. UNCG 12, Mercer 2.
As the lead off, Laudino single and Potter reached on a fielder's choice. A double from Williams scored Potter with a single from Prom scoring Williams. The match ended with the Bears trailing by eight total.
