Mercer falls to 19th-ranked Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. – Sean Goldsmith led the Mercer offense with a hat trick and assist in the Bears' road setback by a 22-9 scoreline in Virginia's capital to 19th-ranked Richmond.
The Bears (4-9, 1-2 SoCon) battled back from an early 2-0 hole and scored two of the next three on strikes from Ashton Wood and Goldsmith. Daniel Shumake was credited with setting up Goldsmith's first strike. When the Spiders (7-4, 2-1 SoCon) answered with three consecutive, Cole Leggett set up Taylor Dooley for the score and was followed by Parker Junod to make it a 6-4 ballgame. Goldsmith notched another off a Leggett assist and Matthew Winegarder scored after to close the halftime gap to 9-6.
Second half highlights included a Goldsmith to Leggett strike for a goal, Nick Rockefeller assisting Winegardner and Goldsmith completing his hat trick courtesy of a Dooley helper.
Mercer will stay on the road when they face No. 8 Jacksonville in a road contest. Opening faceoff from Rock Stadium is slated for Noon on April 23.
