Mercer notches most goals in a game since 2020
MACON, Ga. – Taylor Dooley recorded seven points from six goals and assist to lead Mercer to their first league win of the season on Saturday afternoon over Hampton, 22-6. Mercer (4-8, 1-1 SoCon) saw 13 different Bears get on the scoresheet with goals, including three – Cole Legget (3), Nick Rockefeller (2) and Sean Goldsmith (2) – who had at least a pair.
The Bears set the tempo for the game when they had the first nine before the Pirates (0-7, 0-2) could get on the board. Dooley tallied a hat trick with just 6:11 on the clock in the first quarter and added two more before the first frame ended. Goldsmith, Leggett and Parker Junod also scored in the opening frame.
Like he did in the first quarter, Dooley opened the scoring in the second off a pass from Leggett just four minutes and change into the period for a 9-0 lead. Hampton stopped the bleeding when Miles Fawcett got the Pirates on the board just 40 seconds later. The Bears answered back with two from Carl Klepper and Rockefeller to take an 11-1 lead into the intermission.
Leggett tallied the first two of Mercer's goals in the third to bring the lead up to 13-2 after Hampton got one back. Two Pirate goals in under two minutes brought them to within nine, but were answered by consecutive goals notched by Rockefeller, Goldsmith and Ryan Harkin. The 14:13 strike in the fourth was Harkin's first goal of his career.
In a 10-plus minute stretch as the game wound down, Mercer tallied six to stretch the lead. Scorers included Ryan Brooks (first of his career), Christian Laureano, Tim Kroneberger, Jack Parolin and Khory Reid.
Goldsmith led the Bears with four assists, Leggett, Junod, Parolin and Brandon Paxton each contributed two.
Colin Kelley and Jack Meyer split time in the cage in the game. The two combined to make 11 saves.
Mercer fired 43 shots, with 29 of them being on cage. The Bears also were a perfect 26-for-26 in clearing opportunities.
Next time out, the Bears will visit Richmond for another league match. Opening faceoff with the Spiders is set for 11 a.m.
