Samford beats Mercer 7-6

Greensboro, N.C. – The Mercer Bears finished their season with a 7-6 loss to the Samford Bulldogs in the second day of the Southern Conference Softball Championships.

SAMFORD 7, MERCER 6

Alyssa Woods singled to first base, recording the first hit of the game. A double by Diamond Williams scored Woods, giving the Bears an early one-run lead.

In the top of the third, Madison Headley lead with a single to third base. A sacrifice bunt from Rebeca Laudino advanced Headley to second. Woods walked and Williams doubled, scoring Headley. Mercer 2, Samford 0.

For Samford, a single from McKayla Cothran advanced Sarah Squillace who reached on fielders' choice. A double from Timberlyn Shurbutt scored both on base, tying the game at two.

The Bears regained the lead in the top of the fourth starting with a lead off double from Grace Prom. Headley singled, scoring Elisa Rosado (pinch runner). Mercer 3, Samford 2.

Williams earned a walk in the top of the fifth and advanced to second with a left center single from Tori Hedgecock. Morgan Hall singled up the middle to load the bases. Sophie Sumner entered as a pinch hitter and singled to second base, scoring Williams and Hedgecock. Kylie Helm pinch hit and singled down the right field line to score Hall. Mercer 6, Samford 2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Mary Katherine Tedder walked and moved to third with a double by Shurbutt. A double by Merritt Cahoon scored Tedder and Shurbutt, bringing the game within two. A single from Ansley Yantis scored Cahoon. Mercer 6, Samford 5.

Hedgecock and Hall walked in the top of the seventh. Along with a hit by pitch to Prom. The Bears were unable to capitalize on the bases being loaded.

Gwynnie Hornibrook and Yantis walked in the bottom of the seventh. Abigail Dorsett (pinch runner) scored on a double by Grier Bruce, tying the game at six. Yantis scored on a hit by Squillace, ending the ball game.
