Backstopped Win and Draw Against ACC Foes
Mercer Bears men's soccer goalkeeper Trevor McMullen is the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, for the week ending Monday Sept. 5.
McMullen, a junior from Decatur, Ga., was key in the Bears successful trip to the Virginia Tech Tournament held in Blacksburg, Va.
The Bears faced two opponents from the Atlantic Coast Conference, both of whom had gotten votes in the latest national poll by College Soccer News. On Friday, McMullen surrendered just one goal to North Carolina State, in a 1-1 draw. On Monday, although he did give up two goals to Virginia Tech, one came on penalty kick. He made several plays to break up crosses and kept the Hokies from creating more scoring chances in the Bears' 3-2 win.
For the two games, McMullen was officially credited with six saves. He has played in all four games for the Bears (2-0-2) this season, helping them to an undefeated start in their first four games.
Mercer wraps up a four-game road swing on Friday Sept. 9 in Tampa against South Florida. The Bears will then start a seven-game homestand Sunday Sept. 11 against Florida Gulf Coast.
