Bears Fall to Furman at Home

Bears drop to 7-11 overall, 0-5 SoCon
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's basketball program (7-11, 0-5) fell, 84-66, to Furman (13-5, 4-1) on Wednesday night at Hawkins Arena. Mercer has not beaten Furman since 2016, and this is the first time the Bears have started 0-5 in the Southern Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams traded leads until Furman went on a 10-0 run from 16:36 to 14:40. The Paladins continued the pressure, going on a 15-2 run from 12:50 to 7:45.
"We were a step behind," head coach Greg Gary said. "They shoot the ball so well, and we let them get their head up early. They made some early shots and got confidence from there."
Jah Quinones claimed a steal at 3:23 which turned into a three-pointer by James Glisson III to cut the lead to 13 points. This was the lowest deficit in five minutes for the Bears.
The momentum continued for Furman, however, as the Paladins closed out the first half on an 11-0 run. Furman took a 52-32 lead into halftime. The Paladins shot 71.6% from the field in the first half, including 73% from beyond the arc.
Mercer returned from halftime with more energy and held Furman scoreless on its first five possessions. The Bears then went on an 8-2 run led by six points from Shannon Grant. During much of this stretch, Furman shot 1-for-10, including a scoring drought for over four minutes.
"I thought we did a much better job in the second half playing defense, making it a little more difficult on them," Gary added. "But you can't spot a good team that many points in the first half."
Despite a better performance in the second half, the Bears could not overcome Furman's point total. The Paladins emerged with a win, 84-66.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Bears notched the highest point total since December 28 at Samford. Four players scored in double figures led by S. Grant going 8-of-9 for 16 points. He set season highs in points and rebounds (6) in his fifth appearance of the season.
Quinones finished just two rebounds shy of a double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds. Kamar Robertson also finished with 12 points, and James Glisson III rounded out those in double figures with 10 points and five rebounds.
Mercer outrebounded Furman, 38-31, spearheaded by 16 offensive boards to 8. The Bears finished 42% (26-of-62) from the field and only 20% (3-of-15) from distance.
"We need to get better offensively," Gary commented. "We're still struggling to score the ball. We're getting some open shots, but we need to get easier ones for each other."
UP NEXT: Mercer embarks on a three-game road stretch beginning at ETSU on Saturday, January 14 at 4 p.m.
