MACON, Ga. – The Mercer softball program and head coach Lindsay Fico announced the 2023 schedule. Of the 56 games, Mercer will play 20 in front of the home crowd at Sikes Field.Â
"I am extremely excited to start the spring! We played a more competitive fall schedule to better prepare us for the challenging road ahead," said Coach Fico. "Our non-conference games should only continue that preparation as we move into conference play. We will have a number of new faces in the lineup this year. Their contribution to our returning players was very evident this fall and I look forward to what they continue to do together this spring."
The Bears open the season at home by hosting the annual Heart of Georgia Classic. The Bears will go head to head with Florida A&M University on Friday (Feb. 10), the University of Buffalo and Army on Saturday (Feb. 11), and Jacksonville State University on Sunday (Feb. 12).Â
Mercer then begins a six-game streak on the road. They will play a midweek game against Kennesaw, then head to DeLand, FL for the Stetson Hatter Classic. The Bears then return home for two midweek games and the Mercer Bear Invitational, Feb. 24-25.Â
Among the remaining non-conference series is the East Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, AL (March 3-5) with a lone game against Clemson University (March 8). The team then travels to Fico's alma mater on March 10 for the University of Florida Tournament in Gainesville, FL.
The team will have two weeks of Wednesday games including a home match against Alabama State (March 15) and an away doubleheader against Georgia State (March 22).Â
Southern Conference play begins for the Bears March 25-26 away against Samford University and returns home to play UT Chattanooga (April 1-2). The Bears will then face Georgia Tech at home (April 4) before going on another seven-game streak on the road.Â
Conference play will continue at home on April 22 against Western Carolina with a midweek game against the University of Georgia in Athens (April 26). The Bears will finish up the regular season with a home series against UNC Greensboro (April 29-30) and against East Tennessee State in Johnson City, TN (May 6-7).
The Southern Conference Tournament will take place in Chattanooga, TNÂ from May 10-13. Fico is in her second season with the Bears and went 7-11 in conference play last season.
