
Three-Game Home Stretch Begins Against UNCG

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's basketball program begins a three-game homestand on Thursday, February 2 at 7 p.m. against UNCG. The Bears have won four of the last five games in conference play while the Spartans saw a five-game win streak snapped by Furman on Saturday.

The two teams met in Greensboro on January 21 where UNCG narrowly edged Mercer in a defensive battle. UNCG leads the all-time series with Mercer, 12-9, but the Bears are 7-4 at home against the Spartans.

SCOUTING UNCG
The Spartans are currently in a three-way tie for first place in the Southern Conference with Samford and Furman. Since Mercer and UNCG last played, UNCG beat VMI, 62-50, and lost to Furman, 69-57. In the defeat to Furman, Mohammed Abdulsalam finished two rebounds shy of a double-double with a season-high 23 points.
When Mercer and UNCG met in Greensboro in January, the Bears tied the score 44-44 with under seven minutes to go, but the Spartans earned the win, 59-48. Mikeal Brown-Jones led the effort with 17 points. The junior ranks second in the conference in field goal percentage at 57.8%.
UNCG and Mercer are the best defensive teams in the conference currently, allowing only 63.5 PPG and 68.3 PPG, respectively. The Spartans have the highest turnover margin in the SoCon at +2.2.
RECENT ACTION
Mercer earned another road win at The Citadel on Saturday with a 74-65 victory spearheaded by another 26-point showing by Jalyn McCreary. The redshirt junior tied his career-best point total set in the previous game against ETSU and added 12 rebounds for the second double-double of his career.
Luis Hurtado Jr. recorded the fourth double-double of his career with 10 points and 11 rebounds. McCreary and Hurtado Jr. are the second pair to earn double-doubles for the Bears this season.
The Bears grabbed 43 rebounds against the Bulldogs which is a season-high for Mercer. 74 points was also the highest scoring total for the Bears in conference play this season.
