SERIES HISTORY
Friday's matchup between the Bears and the Tar Heels will be the sixth meeting in program history. The Tar Heels currently lead the series 5-0. The last time these teams met was March 6, 2021, when the Bears fell 8-16 to the Tar Heels at Dorrance Field.
RECENT ACTION
Mercer is under the direction of first-year head coach Ryan Danehy and is 0-1 after the season opener. Mercer is coming off a 20-6 loss to Bucknell last week in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Senior attackman Parker Junod leads the team in points with three (1 goal, 2 assists). Senior defensemen Wesley Chairs led the Bears with four caused turnovers and five groundballs last week.
SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA
North Carolina is currently ranked in the top 20 in many of the lacrosse polls. North Carolina is ranked 19th in the 2023 Inside Lacrosse Preseason Media Poll. North Carolina is led by head coach Joe Breschi, who is entering his 15th season as head coach for the Tar Heels. The Tar Heels are opening their season against the Bears and were picked to finish fourth in the ACC.
The Tar Heels have many returning players. One of these returning players is defensive midfielder Connor Maher who was tabbed as a USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason All-America, Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American, USILA Preseason All-American, and a member of the All-ACC Preseason team. Maher saw action in 14 games last year and was named captain this fall. Maher was also named an All-American at the end of last season.
