MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis program (8-6, 2-0) earned its second win of the weekend after beating Western Carolina (11-6, 0-2), 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. Mary Weston Courville clinched the match for the Bears with a three-set victory on court two.
Western Carolina took the lead after doubles, winning all three courts. Eden Schlagenhauf and Camilla Ciaccia fell in a tiebreak on court two to Chloe Schwarz and Isabella Sambola.
Ciaccia bounced back in singles, claiming the first point for Mercer with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Leilany Ipunesso on court four. Schlagenhauf gave the Bears the lead after beating Madison Schwarz 6-4, 6-1 on court three. Teodora Ristic setup the win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Sambola on court one.
On court two, Courville won the first set 6-4 before dropping the second 6-4 to Jade Groen. In the third set, Courville fought back after falling behind 4-1. The senior faced a match point at deuce down 5-4, but won the point to keep the match alive. While leading 6-5, Courville was behind 40-0 but won four-straight points to win the match and clinch the overall win for the Bears.
UP NEXT: Mercer will play its final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday, March 29 at 2 p.m. against Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Florida.
