
Bears Win Big Against Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, KY. – Mercer Men's Lacrosse team battled against Bellarmine and came out on top in a 15-12 game on Wednesday, March 29. Ryan Danehy and the Bears move to 3-7 on the season and 2-2 in ASUN conference play. Bellarmine moves to 6-3 on the season and 1-2 in ASUN play.
Nine Bears scored in the afternoon. Senior Attackman Parker Junod led the way for the bears with five goals and two assists. Junior attackman Taylor Dooley and junior attackman Jack Parolin each had two for the bears. Senior attackman Carl Klepper, freshman attackman Zach Basisty, freshman attackman Michael Frederick, freshman midfielder Thomas Strong, senior midfielder Matt O'Connor, and graduate student face-off specialist Ashton Wood each added a goal for the bears.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears would start the first quarter off hot with a goal in the first 40 seconds of the game. Parker Junod would find the back of the net off the assist from Kyle Cox. Junod would find the back of the net two minutes later with an assist from sophomore midfielder Connor Panebianco. The Knights answer three minutes later. Ashton Wood won a face-off and pushed the ball down the field to find an open Taylor Dooley, who finished on the doorstep. The Knights would answer again with a goal of their own. Â Zach Basisty would find the back of the net off a pass fake that gave him time and room to shoot. Junod would complete his hat trick in the first quarter with an assist from Dooley. Bellarmine would answer the Bear's two goals with a goal for themselves. However, the bears would find the back of the net off a face-off win with a goal from Ashton Wood. Bellarmine would score a minute later. Thomas Strong would score off the assist from Jack Sullivan pushing the Bear's led 7-4 heading into the second quarter.Â
The Knights would open the scoring in the second quarter. Carl Klepper would answer quickly with a goal of his own. The Bears did not finish scoring in the second quarter. Jack Parolin would score twice in 20 seconds. The first was an unassisted goal and the second was off a Junod assist. Junod would find the back of the net for the fourth time on the afternoon off the assist from Dooley. With 36 seconds remaining in the half, Michael Frederick would score off the assist from Panebianco. The score going into halftime was 12-5. The Knights would score five goals in the third making the score 12-9 heading into the final quarter of the game.
The Bears would concede the first goal of the fourth quarter. However, Taylor Dooley would find the back of the net and end the drought for the Bears and increase the lead to three. The Knights would score to bring the game within two goals. Junod would score his fifth of the game off the assist from Cox with 3:38 remaining in the game. Junod would find a cutting Matt O'Connor to increase the Bear's lead to four. The Knights would score with 15 seconds left in the quarter. The final score of the game was 15-12 and the Bears travel back to Macon as winners.
In the cage, senior goalie Colin Kelley would have 14 saves on the afternoon. Ashton Wood went 19-30 (63%) at the face-off x. Defensively, the Bears caused five turnovers and scooped up 31 groundballs.Â
