Bears Clinch Spot In ASUN Tournament With Win Over Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Mercer men's lacrosse team defeated Lindenwood 12-8 on Saturday evening to clinch a spot in the ASUN Tournament.

The Bears moved to 6-9 and 5-4 in ASUN play and Lindenwood fell to 2-10 and 1-8 in the ASUN.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer had a decisive advantage in faceoffs winning 19 faceoffs to Lindenwood's four. Shots on goal were 20-15 in favor of the Bears. Carl Klepper, Carl Junod, and Matt O'Connor combined to score nine of Mercer's 12 goals with all three recording hat tricks. Junod also added three assists for a six point afternoon.

Ashton Wood won 19-of-23 faceoffs and had a game-high 14 ground balls which also tied a season high for Wood as he also had 14 ground balls against UMBC this season.

Klepper and O'Connor scored the only two goals in a low scoring first quarter that ended with a 2-0 Mercer lead.

After Klepper's second goal of the game early in the second quarter, Lindenwood would score five of the next six goals to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.

Michael Frederick scored a man-up goal followed by a goal from O'Connor to start the third quarter which gave Mercer the lead back at 6-5. After Lindenwood responded to tie it at six, Mercer would go on a 6-0 scoring run to pull away from the Lions with a 12-6 lead with five minutes to play in the game.

UP NEXT: The Bears earned the No. 4 seed in the ASUN Tournament. The Bears will take on No. 5 Bellarmine in the ASUN Quarterfinals on May 2 at 1 p.m. from the campus of Robert Morris in Moon Township, Pennsylvania.
