
Mercer Defeats Longwood 18-5 To Secure 10th Win Of Season

Four different Mercer players scored hat tricks in win
FARMVILLE, Va. – Four different Mercer players scored hat tricks and Mercer's defense was once again stout as Mercer women's lacrosse defeated Longwood 18-5 in Farmville, Virginia Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Bears move to 4-0 in conference play and have limited each conference opponent to less than 10 goals.
Mercer outshot Winthrop 40-12 including a 32-7 shots on goal advantage. The Bears also doubled up the Lancers 18-9 in draw controls.
The Bears got hat tricks from Shannon Urey, Chloe Schaeffer, Lyndsey Lewis, and Kayla Soltys. As a team, Mercer had 11 assists in the game, a season-high.
Soltys and Erin Degnan each had seven draw controls on the afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears gave up the opening goal of the game for the second consecutive game, but again responded with a 4-0 scoring run to take early control of the game at 4-1. Four different goal scorers for the Bears gave them the 4-1 lead.
Longwood made it 5-3 with more than 12 minutes to play in the second quarter, but Mercer would score the remaining seven goals in the second quarter to take a 12-3 lead into halftime.
The goal scoring run in the quarter included two goals from Soltys six seconds apart for her hat track. Lewis also got her hat trick with just over five minutes to play in the first half.
Urey and Schaeffer earned their hat tricks in the third quarter and Mercer led 15-5 after the third quarter.
Maddi Koury scored the only two goals in the fourth quarter for either team.
